But when canon presented a clear answer, that it was Rey’s own intrinsic potential combined with her tapping into Ben Solo’s training through their bond….they just straight up rejected it because they hate the idea of reylo. People would rather have Luke Skywalker lose his daughter and give up looking for her, or have him abandon her on Jakku, than have her develop a beneficial relationship with the one other person who could empathize with having the Force and being cosmically destined for isolation.

Hey! I have a question for you regarding Reylo. When do you think Rey began to actually romantically attracted to Kylo? Because during and after the events of Starkiller Base it seemed like,and rightfully so, she did not like Kylo for hurting her, Finn and killing Han. But when did it all switch around? Is there a moment you recognize where it all switched. Also when do you think there was a moment where she PHYSICALLY struck by his looks?

Dear Anon, thank you for indulging all my Reylo ~~basest~~ deepest feelings! LOL!

Something happened on Starkiller in terms of attraction. We can all figure out that Kylo was already deep in it on Starkiller, but Rey also got a spark. Not a romantic spark of course. But I think it is pretty obvious that she was physically struck by his looks the moment he took off the helmet. It was the whole point of the scene! You can tell she is confused. In my view all the crack jokes about that were spot on and canon (LOL). I saw some #sexually confused, #Damn he’s hot, that were hilarious. Right before he removed his mask, there is absolutely no confusion on Rey’s face. But once the mask is gone, she has this moment of utter confusion.

Obviously not what she expected. After that she goes from avoiding looking at him to stealing a few glances as he gets closer. This is what we get from the script:

 Kylo Ren stops, considers her... then reaches up, unlatches
          and REMOVES HIS MASK. Rey reacts, stunned. It takes a moment
          before she regains her own mask of defiance.

Surprisingly the TFA novelization presents us with that:

She just stared at him in silence.
In itself the narrow face that looked back at her was not remarkable. It was almost sensitive. If not for the intensity of his gaze, Ren could have passed for someone she might have met on the dusty streets of Niima Outpost. But there was -that gaze. That, and what lay simmering behind it. (chap 14)

It sounds a bit disappointing at first, especially the “not remarkable”, which to me reads very opposite from the reaction we get (even in the script) and the way they made Adam Driver super attractive in this scene. But on closer inspection, there are some spicy little tidbits: the fact that it feels like a familiar face/presence to her (something that could have been part of her life all these years), and the ending of the extract. “That gaze”. She is attracted by his eyes. Undubitably. Remember Luke’s deleted line “sell herself to the dark side for a pair of pretty eyes”. Indeed. And note the “simmering”. Hot.So, yes, homegirl feels it too.

In the TFA Junior novelization, this is how it is presented:

He had a young man’s face, with an old man’s eyes. His lips and dark hair stood out against the pale complexion of one who shirked the sun. He looked like a student who took no joy in his studies. One who perceived only the great problems of the galaxy and not its simple pleasures. (chap 15)

So that one is marketed for kids right? And the way they carefully describes Kylo as seen through Rey’s eyes is VERY reminiscent of the vampire trope (avoids sun, pale skin, dark hair, old man’s eyes in young man’s face, even the student), something that in recent Junior Lit lore brings to mind these high school heartthrobs:

I mean, it is as transparent as it can be. And we know how the heroine feels and falls for these guys. Note the allusion to “simple pleasures” at the end. Pleasure is in there. And boy, we know that since “simple pleasures” are not in the works, it is coded as “complicated passionate relationship”.

But obviously this doesn’t register immediately for Rey. It can’t because she is not here with her own free will and he has the upper hand at first. The timing and conditions are not right. And in terms of personal development, Rey is not supposed to fall in love or gets sexually mature before the second installment, the one that is coded as adolescence.

Personally I am floored by Kylo’s looks on Force bond 2 (Ah you do? You bet I do!). He says she has the same look she had in the forest, but when he acknowledges he is a monster, her look rather reminds me of that first look in the interrogation scene after the helmet is removed. #confused. And also, in the novelization, we know she thinks about what it would feel like touching him (oh Rey, you naughty girl): “Could they actually touch, across a galaxy?”

But in order to make it as crystal clear as they could for the GA, the big physical attraction moment is not as subtle. It is the shirtless scene. It’s the moment when they put Kylo’s physicality and sexuality in her face (and in ours as a matter of fact). I haven’t seen the script yet, but… In the movie she is flustered, and stumbles on her words. Then she avoids her eyes and asks him to cover. They made it clear she was embarrassed… She wouldn’t be if she didn’t feel something. And again, right after that, she goes to the cave yadiyada (we have discussed the sexual metaphor over and over again), and feels later like touching the guy.

TLJ novelization:

“Oh!”
Kylo was stripped to the waist in his chambers. The angry scar she’d given him in their duel snaked down his face and neck and across his collarbone. (…)
Rey forced herself to look into his eyes -those angry, haunted, needy eyes.

“Oh” indeed!

All these words “stripped”, “hungry eyes”, and the scar compared to a snake (~~My anaconda don’t want none)~~, a recurring symbol for desire and sexuality that SHE gave him.

TLJ Junior novelization:

She saw him standing in his lair on a Star Destroyer, shirtless, his torso as pale as bleached bone.
Rey momentarily looked away in embarrassment, even though the vision came to her through the Force.

Now this one is all about animality, and my dear @raven-maiden would start telling you about wolves and wolf-mating and you would find that quite educational… And don’t get me started about the bone, because this is supposed to be kiddo material! LOL

Now we have covered the “raw” primal desire (and remember how much emphasis was put on this adjective to describe Rey and Kylo’s power..ummm..cough….), but, you ask me, when does it start being romantic? It is funny how it seems that Rey is always one step behind. I think Kylo wants her when he sees her but starts growing…romantic feelings when she gets the saber, with the “Marry Me face”. Rey is probably attracted to him when he removes his helmet but only registers the attraction in TLJ. I think she fell in love with him in the smut hut, but will only register that this is true love in ix.

But, yea, the hut is THE romantic moment. That’s your switch. They make it so obvious that something changes there forever. The use of the Force theme. The fact that he removes his glove. The intimacy of the moment. The fact that she manages to pull him into her world somehow. In the TLJ novelization you get that “raw” adjective again. It is what helps her connect to him. She just has to follow the connection between them to find him, something she compares to “ touching a live wire” (something electrifying, stunning, “raw and powerful”). The live wire between them is a bit like the red string of fate. So she acknowledges the attraction, the raw desire.It prompts her to look for him to comfort her because she knows (as crazy as it sounds) he is the only one that can understand her, she reaches out to him with her feelings and her hand, and you can tell on her face when she starts crying and seeing his future, that, boom, there it is. You even get that low rumble from the thunderstorm (coup de foudre you would say in French for love at first sight) which is like a rumble of the heart exploding all at once.

Love so strong that she is ready to take on the whole world for him: defy Luke, cross the galaxy, defy Snoke. That she starts calling him “Ben” when they meet in the elevator. In the TLJ novelization, there is that line: “She needed to go wherever Kylo Ren could be”. That is pretty straightforward. But again, I don’t think she is fully aware of it. Love can move mountains, they say… Well… How is that about foreshadowing?
